About the EU Battery Regulation
The EU Battery Regulation encompasses a comprehensive set of rules and requirements established by the European Union (EU).
On July 28, 2023, the EU Commission published the new EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) concerning batteries and waste batteries, which replaced the EU Batteries Directive (2006/66/EC) and took effect on August 17, 2023.
The new legislation came into effect on February 18, 2024 and introduces updated requirements focused on improving the sustainability and safety of batteries and battery-powered products throughout their entire lifecycle.

Not designed for industrial use and is neither an electric vehicle battery, an LMT battery, nor an SLI battery
Common formats include 4.5V (3R12), button cell, D, C, AA, AAA, AAAA, A23, 9V (PP3)
LMT Batteries
(Light means of transport)
Sealed, Weighs ≤25 kg
Designed for vehicle traction and powered by an electric motor or by a combination of motor and human power
Category L vehicles
SLI Batteries
(Starting, Lighting or Ignition)
Designed to supply electric power for starting, lighting, or ignition
Used for auxiliary or backup purposes in vehicles, other means of transport or machinery
Industrial Batteries
Weighs >5 kg
Designed for industrial use, intended for industrial uses after
having been subject to repurposing and that is neither an electric vehicle battery, an LMT battery, nor an SLI battery
Includes SBESS (Stationary Battery Energy Storage System)
EV Batteries
(Electric Vehicle)
Weighs >25 kg
Designed to provide electric power for traction in hybrid or electric vehicles
Category L, M, N or O vehicles
Category L as provided for in Regulation (EU) No 168/2013 includes two-, three- or four-wheel vehicles such as powered two-wheel vehicles, tricycles and quad tricycles.
Categories M, N, or O as provided for in Regulation (EU) 2018/858 includes motor vehicles for the carriage of passengers (category M) motor vehicles for the carriage of goods (category N) and their trailers (category O).
